Phoenix roebelenii, commonly known as the pygmy date palm, is one of the most widely used palm trees in landscaping. This small variety of palm tree grows about 6 inches to 1 feet per year. Pygmy date palms grow in any type of well-drained soil, but prefer sandy loam in the U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 10 and 11. Plants may be sold as dioecious, either male or female flowering trees. You need one male and one female to produce creamy flowers in the spring, cross-pollinate and produce small black dates in the fall.
Pygmy date palms do best in well-drained soil. These palms are very versatile and can grow indoors, as an outdoor potted or container tree, or in your lawn. Choose an area outdoors with sandy soil in partial shade to full sun. If you are transplanting a new date palm into a pot or container, choose a palm potting mix. These mixes have excellent drainage and include nutrients to feed the transplant for up to six months.
Palm trees do not like to dry out completely between waterings. Water your outdoor palms two to three times per week when the soil is slightly dry. Irrigate with a soaker hose at the base of the tree rather than overhead watering. If palm leaves remain wet, it can subject them to leaf spots or a bacterial infection and turn leaves brown. Hot summers may necessitate additional watering when there is little rainfall. Water outdoor container palms at the same rate. Indoor palms need less water because they are not in direct sunlight. Continue watering a pygmy date palm about twice a week in the winter.
Spray the leaves on an outdoor palm once a week to wash off excess dust in the hot summertime and salt spray from coastal areas. Pygmy date palms are resilient, but not entirely saltwater tolerant. Spraying the fronds weekly can also help in pest control.
Palm trees need micronutrients that may not occur naturally in your lawn for green, lush growth and health. Fertilize twice a year between March and October with palm tree fertilizer spikes in your lawn to keep your pygmy date palm healthy. Fertilizer spikes are simply inserted into the ground around the drip line of the tree with no mixing or measuring required. Pygmy date palms that are in pots or containers benefit from granulated or liquid palm tree fertilizer.
Plants around 3~4 feet height in 3 gallon pot.
