Nandina plants, also known as heavenly bamboo or sacred bamboo, grow natively in the warm ravines and valleys of Japan, China and India. Despite its exotic name and home turf, nandina plants thrive in U.S. Department of Agriculture,is one of the best compact shrubs for year-round foliage interest.hardiness zones 5 through 10, typically resisting frost and sprouting flowers in June or July. With proper care, this evergreen plant — part of the Berberidaceae family,It features a variety of leaf colors on a fairly dense, evergreen plant. New growth is bronze with orange tints. Older leaves range from blue-green to gold and red.it for its great red- and orange-toned winter color. 'Gulf Stream' is a tough plant, tolerant of urban conditions. Unlike other heavenly bamboos, it is bushy and compact, It makes a fine informal hedge or can be used as a foundation planting. It can also be used in containers or in the mixed border.
Position the nandina in a sunny spot — this plant cannot grow in full shade but thrives in sun or speckled shade. The nandina's colors will become more intense if it is grown in full sun. Ideally, choose a sheltered spot safe from harsh wind that still receives some sunlight, as the nandina prefers its climes cool and sunny.
Keep the plant's soil moist but not saturated at all times. The soil should be slightly damp to the touch but never waterlogged.
Prune dead stems and dead shoot tips down to the base of the plant in the spring season each year. Trim the oldest stems of the plant for dense growth. You can remove up to one-third of the nandina's canes at a time.
Apply an ammonium sulfate evergreen fertilizer in late February or early June. Thoroughly water-in the fertilizer to prevent root burn.
Pull by hand unwanted nandina plants at the roots to prevent infestation, as this type of plant is known as invasive.
